BEAT IT

Cardiac Screening in Maltese Adolescents

Beat it is a local research study which was partly funded by the Malta Heart Foundation. It analysed the largest cohort of adolescents for signs of undiagnosed cardiac illness. The study was completed in 2019 and following its success further study is underway for the possible implementation of a national cardiac screening program.

Participants

Over 2700 Maltese adolescents were screened using an ECG which were individually analysed by medical professionals to assess the need for further evaluation or management.

LINKED TO A CARDIAC CONDITION

1 in 180 individuals had ECG abnormalities identified which were linked to cardiac diseases. Further investigations were performed for these individuals.

 
 

0.3%

LINKED TO SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH

1 in 300 had ECG abnormalities linked with sudden cardiac death. Genetic evaluation of these individuals and family members was performed.

SUPPORT

We provide direct and indirect patient support and care by helping people who are suffering from heart disease, this is only possible through your kind contributions.

EQUIPMENT

We have donated a number of AEDs to multiple entities and installed the first publically available AEDs in Valletta. We have also purchased an intra-aortic balloon pump machine which was donated to Mater Dei Hospital.

 

AWARENESS

A number of talks and articles have been written our team and other leading professionals in order to provide the necessary knowledge for a heart healthy lifestyle.

Volunteer opportunities

All the work and projects done within the Malta Heart Foundation rely solely on the help of medical and non medical volunteers from a vast array of backgrounds. Are you interested in tackling heart disease locally first hand?

Make a Donation

Donations are used to raise awareness on heart disease, purchase life saving equipment to be donated to public entities and local infrastructure, such as AEDs, cardiac equipment, and funding local research.
